Description

The floating oasis on the Alster.
An old, but well-maintained gondola from Venice and flagship of the rowing club Azzurro e.V. in Hamburg; freshly inspected by a marine surveyor and approved by the Waterways and Shipping Authority...
The floating Rolls Royce of the Venetians has been at home in Hamburg, the Venice of the North, for many years and is often rowed sportingly fast by up to 4 rowers in the club.
Through guest trips, we finance part of the maintenance costs, the mooring fees, and if there's enough, also part of the travel costs for regatta participations in Italy.
Your gondolier Carlo is trained in Venice, has been allowed to navigate the Grand Canal with a gondola there since 2009, has crossed the finish line first in regattas since 2021, and enjoys sharing stories about gondolas, Hamburg, and Venice.
There is no fixed route, as weather and traffic conditions on the water must be taken into account.
Take a seat on the soft cushions and enjoy!

What to expect

1

Binnenalster

Several water mills were located on the Binnenalster in the 13th century. The owner of one of these mills in 1256 was Heinrich Reese (Reesendammbrücke).
The Binnenalster is 3m deep and approx. 400m long.

2

Lombards Bridge

The Lombard Bridge follows the course of the old ramparts. Here stood a pawnshop called a "Lombard" (pawnshop business, Lombard rate).
At the eastern end of the bridge is the 10th meridian, which we cross several times on the journey.
The distance between the meridians at our latitude is approx. 70 km. We are 700 km from Greenwich.

3

Outer Alster

The Alster is a 56 km long river that flows into the Elbe in Hamburg. In the middle of the Hamburg city area, the dammed river forms the Alster lakes.
The Außenalster (approx. 10 min away) originated in the 12th century by damming the Alster river for a water mill and was part of the city fortifications. Many beautiful canals lead from the Alster into the city, which we can explore by gondola on longer trips.
The Außenalster is 2.8 km long, 1 km wide, and 2.5 m deep on average.
The Alster waterfront is very popular with Hamburg residents. The "Alster round" for joggers is 7.4 km long and leads once around the Außenalster.
On warm spring and summer days, many pedestrians, cyclists, and picnickers are out and about on the waterfront paths and in the adjacent park areas, enjoying the view of the Außenalster's water.
From the soft cushions of the gondola, you enjoy an unobstructed view of the green Alster waterfront, the villas, and the city silhouette.

4

Alster Arcades

The Alsterarkaden are located directly on the Kleine Alster, planned in 1842 by Hamburg architect Alexis de Chateauneuf.

5

Hamburg City Hall

Opposite the Alsterarkaden are the imposing Hamburg City Hall and the City Hall Lock. Passing through the lock into the Altstadtfleete is only possible on longer tours. The height difference is 1.5 meters and the transit time is 15 minutes.

6

The Alster Fountain is 60 meters high and fills a whole bathtub in 3 seconds.

7

Jungfernstieg

The famous Jungfernstieg lies on the southern shore of the Binnenalster and we almost always see it from the water.
