A remarkable place and definitely a must-see for all visitors to the Polish capital.
The Old Town consists of the town square, surrounded by characteristic tenement houses, and a centrally placed fountain with a sculpture of a mermaid, the city’s symbol, without which the square would be almost unimaginable. Other elements of the Old Town include Castle Square, with the Royal Castle next to it, and Sigismund’s Column. Not far from the Old Town are Piłsudski Square and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
A series of streets known as the Royal Route begins in the Old Town. The Royal Route is the city’s best-known thoroughfare and connects two former royal residences. The Old Town features numerous atmospheric cafés, restaurants and art galleries.

A magnificent Baroque-Classicist royal castle on Warsaw’s Castle Square. Originally, it was the residence of the Dukes of Mazovia and, from the 16th century onwards, the seat of the governing bodies of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: the king and the Sejm (the lower and upper houses of Parliament).
In the 1920s and 1930s, it was the seat of the head of state and the residence of the President of the Republic of Poland. During a visit to the Royal Castle in Warsaw, you can see, for example, the royal chambers built for King Stanisław August Poniatowski, as well as the Sejm chambers. The most outstanding rooms are the Throne Room, decorated with red velvet and gold, the Knights’ Room and the Ballroom, featuring the largest ceiling painting in Poland.
The permanent exhibitions include the Gallery of Paintings, Prince Joseph’s apartment in the Tin-Roofed Palace, and the multimedia exhibition “The Destruction and Reconstruction of the Castle”. The Royal Castle, together with the Old Town, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

1944 was a terrible year for Warsaw. This beautiful city, a true social, architectural and religious melting pot, once known as “The Pearl of the North” for its magnificent historic tenement houses, state-of-the-art sewer system, rapid growth, style and civility, was demolished almost down to the last building and brick. A generation of people not yet 20 years old—the future of the country—perished. What drove the Poles to rise up? Was the price of potential freedom won through struggle not too high?
The Warsaw Rising Museum is not a typical museum. It is more like a time machine that transports its visitors back to 1944. The multimedia exhibition shows the struggle and daily life of the insurgents alongside the horrors of the occupation, the complicated international situation, the communist terror after the war and the fate of the participants in this new situation.
The days leading up to the uprising, its successive phases and its eventual failure are presented using images and sound. Visitors can see over 1,000 authentic exhibits, as well as 1,500 photographs and films. In addition, guests can watch a five-minute 3D simulation of a flight over destroyed and abandoned Warsaw. A must for anyone traveling to Warsaw who wants to get to know the city, at least a little.
