Markusplatz in Venice, which also opens towards the water, served as a model for the design of the Rathausmarkt. The plan for the ensemble, featuring a grand staircase and the design of the Kleine Alster, Alsterarkaden, Schleusenbrücke, City Hall, and other buildings, was conceived as early as 1842.

Portuguese Quarter

Small businesses, particularly the food service industry, have traditionally been and continue to be strongly represented in this neighborhood. The presence of numerous "harbor pubs" therefore also gave today's Portuguese Quarter the name "The Coast" in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 2000s, there was a significant increase in food service establishments, with about 40 cafés and restaurants counted in 2011.

Opened in 1911, the St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel – also known as the Old Elbe Tunnel, distinguishing it from the New Elbe Tunnel established in 1975 – crosses under the Norderelbe for a length of 426.5 meters. With two tunnel tubes, it connects the northern harbor edge at the St. Pauli Piers (north entrance) to the Elbe island of Steinwerder (south entrance). It serves as a public thoroughfare, used by pedestrians and cyclists, and also, to a limited extent, by motor vehicles. Upon its opening, it was considered a technical sensation. It has been a listed monument since 2003 and, on September 7, 2011, was honored with the title 'Historic Monument of Engineering in Germany' by the Federal Chamber of Engineers and the Hamburg Chamber of Engineers for Construction.
