Hamburg City Hall

️ Hamburger Rathaus (Rathaus)
The Neo-Renaissance City Hall, completed in 1897, is a highlight of Hamburger Altstadt and stands as a symbol of the city's independence and wealth. With its richly decorated facade and 112-meter-high tower, it boasts 600 rooms – more than Buckingham Palace! In the inner courtyard, we visit the Hygieia-Brunnen, which was built in memory of the 1892 cholera epidemic. I will guide you through important architectural details, share stories of Hanseatic pride, and explain how this magnificent building still functions today as the seat of the Hamburg government. Don't forget your camera – the Rathausmarkt is one of the most photogenic spots on the tour!

St. Petri Kirche

⛪ St. Peter's Church (St. Petri Kirche)
The oldest parish church in Hamburg, St. Peter's Church, dates back to the 12th century and stands as a silent witness to the city's medieval roots. Rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1842, its neo-Gothic tower rises 132 meters high – making it one of the tallest in Hamburg. We will stop here to admire the striking brick facade, the bronze lion-head door handles, and historical artworks inside, including a 15th-century Gothic altar. Outside the door, I will show you traces of old trade routes and tell stories about the bustling merchant life that once surrounded this sacred space.

️ Patriotische Gesellschaft (Patriotische Gesellschaft)
The neoclassical building, founded in 1765, housed one of Germany's oldest civic organizations – pioneers in education, social reform, and public health.
It was a meeting place for Enlightenment thinkers who shaped Hamburg's progressive spirit.
Outside, we pause at the Stolpersteine – small brass plaques embedded in the pavement – to honor Jewish citizens who were deported during the Nazi era.
These silent memorials connect past ideals of humanity with subsequent tragedies and recall the city's complex legacy.

Trostbrücke

⛪ St. Michael's Church (Michel)
St. Michael's is Hamburg's most iconic church and a symbol of the city's resilience. The 132-meter-high baroque spire has been rebuilt multiple times due to lightning strikes, fire, and war, and still towers over the skyline. Inside, you will find a bright, elegant nave and one of Germany's largest organs. In good weather, we point out the panoramic viewing platform, which offers a breathtaking view of the harbor and the city. Beneath the church lie historical crypts. Although we do not enter during the tour, I will explain how your ticket includes access if you wish to return afterwards.

Deichstraße

️ Deichstraße – Historic Street & Coffee Stop
Deichstraße is Hamburg's oldest preserved street, featuring beautifully restored merchant houses from the 17th–19th centuries that line the Nikolaifleetkanal. These buildings survived the Great Fire of 1842 and offer us a vivid glimpse into the city's Hanseatic past. As we stroll through this charming alley, you'll hear stories of trade, floods, and fire. For those who would like a short break, we'll make an optional stop at the Nord Coast Coffee Roastery – a local favorite known for its artisanal blends and waterfront terrace. A perfect pause before we continue our walk.

️ St. Nikolai Memorial (St. Nikolai Monument)
Once the tallest church in the world, it was heavily bombed during World War II and today stands as Hamburg's central memorial to war victims. The haunting ruins and the 76-meter-high tower serve as a stark reminder of the city's destruction during Operation Gomorrha. Your tour ticket includes admission to the glass elevator to the tower for panoramic views and to the underground museum, which explores the history of air raids and civilian suffering. A moving and essential stop on Hamburg's path of remembrance.

The Krameramtswohnungen are a charming group of 17th-century apartments built for widows of Hamburg merchant guilds. Hidden in a quiet courtyard, this spot offers the best photo opportunities in Hamburg's Old Town.
