Before the outbreak of World War II, Poland was home to one of the largest Jewish diasporas in Europe, totaling approximately 3.5 million Jews. They arrived in Krakow in the 11th century and accounted for over 25% of the city’s population when World War II broke out. Few managed to survive the Nazi extermination, but their religious and cultural achievements can still be admired in Kazimierz, one of Krakow’s districts where the Jewish quarter was located.
We will visit Krakow starting from the historic Old Town. We will see the charming Main Square and slowly make our way to Wawel Hill to see the medieval castle towering over Krakow. From there, we will go to Kazimierz to explore its Jewish heritage. There, we will have lunch in one of the many cozy cafés. Finally, we will visit the museum in the former factory of Oskar Schindler, who saved over 1,000 people from being sent to extermination camps during the war.
