Majdanek – German concentration camp from World War II.
The Majdanek concentration camp operated between autumn 1941 and July 1944 on the southeastern outskirts of Lublin. It was officially called the “Prisoner-of-War Camp of the Waffen-SS in Lublin.” Following the German attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, the camp was intended to become a production site for the SS.
During its approximately 30 months of existence, the “Lublin concentration camp,” as it was officially called from February 1943, fulfilled various functions and was subordinate to different units of the Nazi concentration camp system. The SS used it as a forced-labor camp and, in part, as an extermination camp.
The memorial erected on the former camp grounds after the war was one of the first monuments in Europe to honor the victims of Nazi crimes at this historic site. Today, the museum comprises a total of 70 original buildings.
