Lublin
The German concentration camp in Lublin, commonly known as Majdanek, was established by order of Heinrich Himmler. Built in autumn 1941, the camp was initially called the Waffen-SS Prisoner-of-War Camp Lublin and was renamed the Lublin concentration camp in February 1943. A women's camp also operated in one of the camp's fields from October 1942. Although the project to establish a children's camp at Majdanek was never implemented, Jewish, Belarusian, and Polish children from the Zamosc region were among the adults imprisoned there. The prisoners came from 30 different countries. Most of them were citizens of Poland (mainly Poles and Jews), the Soviet Union, and Czechoslovakia (Jews).
