It is the oldest part of the city and is home to numerous historic buildings, mostly dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Royal Castle, the city walls, St. John’s Cathedral, and the Barbican. The settlement itself dates back to the period between the 13th and 14th centuries.
During World War II, the Old Town was almost completely destroyed and subsequently rebuilt. The project was the world’s first attempt to revive an entire historic city center and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. Sigismund’s Column (Polish: Kolumna Zygmunta) was originally erected in 1644 and is located in Castle Square. It is one of Warsaw’s most famous landmarks and the first secular monument in the form of a column in modern history. The column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III Vasa, who moved the Polish capital from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596.

The Warsaw Barbican is one of the few remaining relics of the complex network of historic fortifications that once surrounded Warsaw. It lies between the Old Town and the New Town and is a major tourist attraction.

The town of New Warsaw was founded in the early 15th century and was located north of Old Warsaw. In 1791, it was incorporated into the city of Warsaw. Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska, was born here on November 7, 1867, and soon changed history forever.

Warsaw’s Old Town Market Square (Polish: Rynek Starego Miasta) is the center and oldest part of Warsaw’s Old Town, Poland. The district was damaged by German Luftwaffe bombs during the invasion of Poland (1939) and the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The old market square was rebuilt in the 1950s. Today, it is a major tourist attraction. The present-day buildings were reconstructed between 1948 and 1953 to look as they did in the 17th century, when they were mainly inhabited by wealthy merchant families. Since 1855, it has been home to a bronze sculpture of the Warsaw Mermaid by Konstanty Hegel.

The Royal Route is a former communication route that led south from the Old Town. Today, it consists of a series of interconnected Warsaw streets featuring a range of historic landmarks, including many associated with Fryderyk Chopin, who lived here for the first 20 years of his life. Today, it is a true hidden gem, completely unknown to both locals and visitors. The wooden houses were part of the reparations that Finland was required to pay to the former Soviet Union after World War II. The Jazdów estate originally consisted of 90 houses built for employees of the Warsaw Reconstruction Office, whose task was to prepare large-scale reconstruction projects for the postwar period. A section of the Jazdów estate comprising 27 houses has survived; only seven are occupied by local residents, while the remaining 20 are occupied by various NGOs and organizations with one goal in mind: nature conservation.
