Wolf's Lair "Hitler's Headquarters" – Full-Day Tour from Warsaw by Car

In the heart of Masuria in northern Poland, deep in the forest, lie the ruins of Adolf Hitler’s former headquarters. Built in Gierloz between 1940 and 1944, it attracts tourists with its dark atmosphere and the warning enclosed within the walls of its damaged buildings. Hitler called it “Wolf’s Lair,” referring to his pseudonym “Wolf,” which he used to sign articles in the 1920s.
Hitler’s headquarters was very well camouflaged, like most wartime sites. The city hidden in the forest consisted of 200 buildings in total: shelters, barracks, 2 airfields, a power plant, a railway station, air-conditioning systems, a water supply system, a heating plant, and two teleprinters.
More than 2,000 people lived there in 1944. Hitler himself spent over 800 days at Wolf’s Lair. On July 20, 1944, Colonel Count Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg made an unsuccessful attempt on Adolf Hitler’s life. Hitler survived the explosion and dealt brutally with his opponents.
Wolf’s Lair is not just a bunker; it is a place where crimes against humanity were planned.
Here, decisions were made to establish new concentration camps, use prisoners in the German armaments industry, and take the lives of hundreds of people from European nations.
There were plans to expand the complex, but the work was never completed due to the Red Army’s rapid advance during the Baltic Offensive in autumn 1944. On January 25, 1945, Wolf’s Lair was blown up and abandoned 48 hours before the Soviet Army arrived.
