In this workshop, you will get to know the oud and the ney more closely and learn about the unique sound worlds of these two instruments. The oud, one of the oldest and most versatile string instruments, offers a wide range of expressive possibilities that you can explore in this course. You will learn the basic playing techniques of the oud and experiment with how to create different tunings and sound colors. The ney, a traditional reed flute with a meditative and emotional sound, will also be covered. You will learn how to play the ney using breath technique and finger control to produce its characteristic music. In addition to the practical work on the instruments, you will gain insight into makam theory, the melodic structure of the music from this region.
