The early medieval castles are among Hamburg's most significant archaeological monuments. Archaeological excavations have revealed traces of their eventful history. Deep beneath today's street level lies the foundation of the Bishop's Castle. The 12th-century tower foundation is Hamburg's oldest surviving stone building. Just a few meters away was the Hammaburg from the 8th to 11th centuries, the nucleus of the Hanseatic city. Today's rampart-like steel sculpture on Hammaburg-Platz is a reminder of the mighty castle complex that gave the city its name. Both monuments connect the origin and development of Hamburg with our present day.Meeting point: Bischofsburg Museum – Speersort 10 (corner of Kreuslerstr.)Registration information: Registration required at: 040 42871 2497
