The early medieval castles are among Hamburg's most significant archaeological monuments. Archaeological excavations have revealed traces of their eventful history. Deep beneath today's street level lies the foundation of the Bishop's Castle. The 12th-century tower foundation is Hamburg's oldest surviving stone building. Just a few meters away was the Hammaburg from the 8th to 11th centuries, the nucleus of the Hanseatic city. Today's rampart-like steel sculpture on Hammaburg-Platz is a reminder of the mighty castle complex that gave the city its name. The archaeological tour begins at one of Hamburg's most significant archaeological sites: the Bischofsburg. The 12th-century ring-shaped tower foundation, with its 19-meter diameter, is the oldest preserved stone building in Hamburg's Old Town. During the guided tour, participants will learn why the foundation is named after a bishop and what function this massive masonry served during Hamburg's early history. They will gain insights into the era of medieval castle complexes hidden beneath the streets, houses, and squares of the Old Town. The current rampart-like steel sculpture on Hammaburg-Platz commemorates the legendary "Hammaburg," the origin and namesake of the city of Hamburg.
