1756: Aletta tries to reclaim the moor. On her farm in Breddorf, she wants to counter the unforgiving everyday life as a moor farmer with humor and song, but is repeatedly put to hard tests.1999 Cato flees with her daughter Kira from her husband into the moor, exactly into the house that Aletta once lived in.2025 Kira's son Elias seeks refuge in the moor with his Grandma Cato, to avoid having to face the mess he's made.Three generations, three interwoven stories against the backdrop of the moor, which in one way or another determines the protagonists' lives."Spiegelland" is an intense, atmospheric novel, and we are absolutely thrilled about Rebekka Frank's visit to the Bücherstube and the conversation with her.

When Elli Hajek retreats to a secluded house to write, she remembers a figure her Czech grandmother once told her about: Viktorka, the young woman who was declared insane after a serious event and lived alone in the Bohemian Forest from then on. When Elli learns that Viktorka really existed, she travels to the country she herself fled from as a child. Elli wants to learn more – but deep in the forest, between glowing ferns and a rushing river, another task awaits her: Before she learns the truth about Viktorka, Elli must confront her own repressed history. The new novel by Jarka Kubsova has just been released and we love everything about it! "Bergland" and "Marschlande" were already great, but the new book... We simply had to invite her again, not least after the incredibly gratifying experience of the evening with her in 2023. And Jarka wanted to as well. Hooray!!!

For St. Jerome's Day, September 30th, International Translation Day, Cornelius Hartz will be a guest at Bücherstube Fuhlsbüttel. There, he will talk with the host Daniel Hagemann about his brilliant translations of novels by Liz Moore or M.L. Stedman, among other things. What does a translator actually do? Do they decide for themselves what gets translated, or do they receive assignments for it? Can you learn it, or is it a talent you either have or don't?Cornelius Hartz was born in Lübeck and lives in Hamburg. He has worked as a bartender, university lecturer, and in the travel industry. Meanwhile, he also earned his doctorate in classical philology. But this evening will be about literature and translation. And about everything you've always wanted to know about it.
