Ohlsdorf Cemetery is a globally recognized work of art. An ensemble of tombs, sculptures, and park design. An oasis of tranquility and, at the same time, a treasure trove of Hamburg's history. On this tour, we will pass the Revolution Monument of 1918, the Old Hamburg Memorial Cemetery, the Honor Grove of Resistance Fighters against the Nazi Dictatorship, the Blood Beech district, the Poets' Corner, and the old crematorium. Magnificent gravestones from different eras bear witness to various burial cultures. It may seem paradoxical, but nowhere else is the diversity and contradictoriness of Hamburg's history brought to life so vividly and clearly as in this beautiful park, which was already awarded a prize at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. But there are also curiosities to marvel at, such as the burial site of the "King of Albania" or a gravestone with a letter slot and the inscription "Advertising forbidden." After all, our tour is not meant to be a funeral march. It is highly interesting to trace different burial cultures from recent history. We will also marvel at the graves of famous Hamburg residents, such as the burial site of Henry Vahl, Gustaf Gründgens, Ida Ehre, Fritz Schumacher, Alfred Lichtwark, or the family grave of the Hafenbeks. Additional dates for private city tours are possible at any time.
