“Schmidt! Living Democracy” Who was Helmut Schmidt? What does his time as a soldier in World War II have to do with his finance, economic, and European policies as Chancellor and Minister, and why did he travel so often to the USA and China? The exhibition “Schmidt! Living Democracy” provides insights into a century of German and international contemporary history and highlights the still highly relevant conflict issues, especially from the 1970s and 1980s. In the spirit of Schmidt, we also invite our guests to engage in discussion and pose questions about the future of democracy in Germany, Europe, and the world.

"The real Hamburgers come from Barmbek!", says a 1957 election campaign spot by Helmut Schmidt. In fact, the later Chancellor had quite a lot in common with Barmbek and the adjacent districts. In Richardstraße, he played in the garden with his brother Wolfgang, and along the Eilbek Canal was his route to piano lessons on Uhlenhorst. And in the midst of the war, Helmut Schmidt moved into his first own apartment with his wife Loki in Gluckstraße. His childhood and youth in the former working-class district and the proximity to the Alster shaped him his entire life. On this telephone walk, we follow the young Helmut Schmidt from his birth in the former Finkenau Women's Clinic to his time as a soldier in World War II."Culture by Phone" brings guided tours from the museum home to you easily via telephone. For half a century, Loki and Helmut Schmidt lived in Hamburg-Langenhorn on Neubergerweg. Their house is today a place of contemporary history. The house served in the 1970s alongside the Chancellor's bungalow in Bonn as a sort of second, unofficial seat of government. Schmidt's friends such as Giscard d'Estaing and Henry Kissinger were guests here. The Spanish King Juan Carlos, the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, and the Polish Prime Minister Edward Gierek also visited the quiet residential area on the outskirts of the city.“Bei Anruf Kultur” brings guided tours from the museum home in a straightforward way via telephone. The exhibition "Schmidt! Living Democracy" offers insights into a century of German and international contemporary history, highlighting — still highly relevant — conflict topics, particularly from the 1970s and 1980s. At its core is the life's work of our namesake: democracy. Freedom of expression, and if necessary, controversial debate, along with the competition of ideas for the common good, were central concerns for him.In the spirit of Schmidt, we also invite our guests to engage in discussion and pose questions about the future of democracy in Germany, Europe, and the world."Culture by Phone" brings guided tours from the museum directly to your home in a straightforward way via telephone.
