This tour offers a quick insight into Barcelona’s rich and complex history. On a leisurely walk through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, we follow in the footsteps of its ancestors and learn more about the various eras and figures that have shaped the history of this heroic city over more than 2,000 years. Barcelona was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC and still preserves some of its origins in its medieval buildings. During the flourishing times of the Kingdom of Aragon, it was one of the central ports of medieval maritime trade, with many commercial and diplomatic delegations based in the city. The Jewish community that lived in El Call also contributed for centuries to consolidating the culturally rich and cosmopolitan spirit, until 1492, when the Iberian Peninsula ceased to be home to all three religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Finally, we will learn more about the political changes following the War of the Spanish Succession (1702–1715), whose repercussions can still be felt today.
