Grindelhof

About half of the Jewish population in Hamburg lived in the Grindelviertel until the persecutions during the Nazi era. Prayer rooms, schools, and shops with Hebrew books or kosher food filled the streets around the Bornplatz synagogue after Jewish life had gradually shifted from the Neustadt to the Grindelviertel since the turn of the century. In addition to the reopened Talmud-Tora school, which is the remnant of a former synagogue, and the foundation plan of the Bornplatz synagogue, whose reconstruction is currently being discussed, memorial plaques and stumbling stones along this city tour from the Abaton cinema to Hallerstraße remind us of Jewish life in the district. Moreover, there has been a Jewish café here again for a few years.
