The Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting the first solo exhibition in Germany by the artist Carrie Yamaoka (*1957). The presentation in the atrium of the Galerie der Gegenwart is held on the occasion of the award of the Maria Lassnig Prize to the New York-based, multidisciplinary artist. In her artistic work, Yamaoka is interested in mutable materials and surfaces; for example, she often combines photography with text panels and reflective picture carriers. Chemical processes and fleeting transformations also play an important role in her work, questioning the possibilities of recording and documentation. Occasionally, the artist alters her earlier works again after several years, thus challenging assumptions about the chronological development of an artistic oeuvre. The reflective surfaces of her works, which fluctuate between image, photography, and sculpture, allow space, light, and viewers to flow into each other in constantly changing perspectives and forms of appearance.
