"The World Is Crazy!" is based on the novel "Tram 83" by Fiston Mwanza Mujila. The play is set in a fictional African city, while also addressing our own world. The two main characters are unlikely friends: Lucien, a rather introverted writer who returns from Europe at the beginning of the novel, and Requiem, a charismatic but unscrupulous crook who takes him in. Next to the run-down railway station where Lucien arrives stands Tram 83, a bar and the pulsating centre of the city. "All roads lead to Tram 83," the author said in an interview, adding: "All roads lead to sin." On a small stage, musicians perform every evening, including the diva of the railway tracks, who fascinates everyone with her voice and recordings of approaching steam locomotives, which she uses as a backdrop for her compositions. Music plays an important role in the bar, the novel and the production.
