Supervision: Jörg Pfenningschmidt. Due to the climate crisis and insect extinction, perennial plantings are suddenly experiencing renewed appreciation. Because perennials are considered labor-intensive, more and more gardens are disappearing under gravel or lawns. Once established, perennial beds are actually easier to maintain than lawns with proper care and, unlike gravel, offer food and habitat for birds and insects. Beyond all practicality, perennial plantings are above all one thing: a sensory experience of form, color, scent, and dynamism.

Leader: Katja Erber, Nabu. Together, we want to dive into the mysterious world of nocturnal hunters. The Nienstedten cemetery is not only a historically significant place but also a valuable habitat for numerous animal species – including several bat species that find ideal conditions for hunting and resting here. In approximately 90 minutes, you will learn: • which bat species occur in Hamburg and specifically here in Nienstedten • how bats hunt, communicate, and navigate • why cemeteries are important refuges for them • how modern technology – such as bat detectors – makes their calls audible to us • what each of us can do to protect these endangered animals Of course, we will also try to experience the animals live. With a bit of luck, we can observe their hunting flights over the old trees and open spaces.
