Walking meditation is a spiritual form of action – a kind of cross between a religious procession, a pilgrimage, and the meditative practice of the Jesus Prayer or mantra. It offers a personal spiritual experience and at the same time makes a visible statement for peace and climate justice. Walking meditation has its origins in Zen Buddhism and was later adopted into Christian culture by various monastic orders. More recently, it has been rediscovered as an unusual form of political action. We walk very slowly and silently. With every step and breath, we connect in love with the earth beneath our feet, the sky above us, and the people in front of, behind, and around us. We move as a registered demonstration in public space, from St. George's Church to St. Mary's Cathedral, depending on the number of participants, on the sidewalk or on the street. The Hamburg police will accompany us and ensure a safe process together with us.
Those who wish may bring a personal message on the theme of peace and the preservation of creation on an A4 poster – ideally with a cord for hanging – as well as a small lantern.
