The Kramer Widow's Apartment is one of the last remaining examples of a typical Hamburg residential courtyard complex from the 17th century. The apartments, known as Krameramtstuben, were built for the widows of the members of the Krameramt. One of the old widow's apartments is still preserved in its original condition today. It has been furnished with furniture from Hamburg's merchant households from the mid-19th century. The cramped living conditions from over 150 years ago can still be experienced today. However, despite the technical and spatial constraints, the residents were not poor people but members of a middle class that made up a large portion of the urban population at that time.
