With a new site selection process, Germany finally aims to find a solution to one of its greatest environmental challenges:The disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In several stages, all regions in Germany will be investigated by the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (BGE) in order to identify the best possible site. The process presents many challenges, but from a democratic perspective and in terms of the relationship between the state and citizens, it also represents a genuine innovation. At the GRÜNEN evening on October 26, 2026, we want to examine the latest developments. Where does the site search currently stand? How does the process work, and what makes it so special? What opportunities are there to get involved in the site search? And what significance can such a process have in the face of growing political and democratic disillusionment? Our speaker that evening is Dörte Themann. She is co-coordinator of the Atomic Energy Working Group (part of the Federal Working Group on Energy) and is currently pursuing a doctorate on the public participation process for site selection.
