Can centuries-old music still be relevant today? This is the question that AlsterVokal, the new project chamber choir of the Alsterbund parish, explores in its inaugural concert.Death and transience were everyday companions of life in the Baroque era. It is therefore not surprising that death, suffering, and pain are constantly addressed by Johann Sebastian Bach. However, texts that Bach set to music in this context often seem strange at first glance today. Nevertheless, the same themes are still constantly received by society today: The debate surrounding the legal reform of assisted suicide addresses the subject matter, as do questions about how an increasingly aging society can ensure care and medical treatment for all people in the future. AlsterVokal, together with the Alsterdorf Chamber Orchestra, soloists Floraline Spallek (soprano), Paula Rein (alto), Lukas Siebert (tenor), and Oliver Zinn (bass), will perform the Bach cantatas "Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgendein Schmerz sei", "Liebster Gott, wann werd' ich sterben", and "Mit Fried' und Freud' ich fahr dahin". Between the cantatas, in conversation with physician Clemens Heise, the relevance of the texts set to music by Bach concerning pain and death today will be explored.DirectionRenate Hübner and Kasimir SydowOrganizerEvangelical Lutheran Alsterbund Parish Hamburg
