Beethoven's late cello sonatas open a view into a new musical freedom, in which cello and piano speak to each other as equal voices. Fauré's second cello sonata leads this search for expression into a more refined, inwardly directed sound world; its slow movement dates back to a Chant funéraire that Fauré wrote for the centenary of Napoleon's death. Saint-Saëns' first cello sonata combines classical clarity with passionate drama and romantic departure.
