Chicago – A World City in its Awkward Years, Germany 1931Directed by: Heinrich Hauserwith music by Hans-Christoph Hartmann, saxophoneand Joachim Kamps, pianoChicago – A World City in its Awkward Years stands in the tradition of such famous city films as Walter Ruttmann's Berlin, the Symphony of a Metropolis from 1927. In the dynamic between avant-garde and cultural film, between technical progress and the dark sides of industrial production, Hauser's portrait establishes itself as a personal, factual, and sober description of the second-largest city in the USA. The people who inhabit it are at the center. The musicians Joachim Kamps (piano) and Hans-Christoph Hartmann (saxophone) guide the viewers and listeners through the film with their pieces and improvisations, illustrating a musical picture of the dreams and their interpretations in the film with many acoustic effects. The musicians have been active in the Hamburg jazz scene for many years, performing in various ensembles under their own names or as side men.
