The fascination of the harbor world in miniature is showcased by model building clubs on weekends at the German Harbor Museum. In the shed and in the large water basin on the outdoor area, ship models ranging from the tugboat to bulk carriers, container ships, and tankers can be admired. On this day, the floating objects SAUGER IV and SAATSEE are operating under steam. What is a steam engine? Two floating work devices from the German Harbor Museum provide a clear answer. The floating crane "Saatsee," built in 1917, is a Hercules with a functional, coal-fired steam engine used for lifting, lowering, and transporting loads. The suction dredger "Sauger IV," a veteran of Elbe dredging with a functional 720 HP steam engine, built in 1909, can take water-mixed dredged material from barges and pump it onto landfill sites. The steam operation is supervised by boiler operators and two crews of volunteers who are also happy to answer visitors' questions. On the historic box barge, it’s Open Ship, and the Frieda Ehlers is also in operation, offering trips in the Hamburg harbor.

Die PEKING ist derzeit noch nicht barrierefrei zugänglich. Personen mit eingeschränkter Mobilität wird die Teilnahme an den Rundgängen daher nicht empfohlen. Rollatoren, Rollstühle, Kinderwagen, Buggies o. ä. können nicht mitgeführt werden. Bei den Rundgängen muss festes Schuhwerk getragen werden. Zehentrenner, Schlappen, Pumps o.ä. sind nicht zulässig. Kosten: 15 Euro (inkl. Besuch des Hafenmuseums). Für Kinder und Jugendliche unter 18 Jahren ist die Teilnahme kostenfrei, aber eine Anmeldung notwendig. Die Teilnehmerzahl pro Rundgang ist auf 15 Personen beschränkt. Aus Sicherheitsgründen dürfen nur Menschen ab einer Körperhöhe von 1,20 m teilnehmen. Die ständige Ausstellung des Deutschen Hafenmuseums kann man sich mit einem Gang über das Gelände buchstäblich erlaufen. Die Exponate innerhalb des 50er-Schuppens sind im Vergleich zu den schwimmenden Exponaten oder den Kranen am Kai eher klein, aber natürlich sind sie alle gleichermaßen wichtig, um sich über die Hafengeschichte zu informieren. Auf dem Freigelände stehen die ersten Großgeräte aus der Anfangszeit des Containers : Van Carrier, die für den Transport der „Kisten" auf den Terminals entwickelt wurden. Wie das funktioniert, wird regelmäßig vorgeführt. Die großen Portalkrane, die einst für den Umschlag zwischen Schiff und Schuppen sorgten, säumen den Bremer Kai. Über die Pontonanlage sind der Schutendampfsauger SAUGER IV von 1909 und der Schwimm-Dampfkran SAATSEE von 1917 zugänglich. Beide Großobjekte verfügen über Dampfanlagen, die an einem Wochenende im Monat in Betrieb genommen werden. Die Arbeit des Ewerführers und das Leben an Bord zeigt eine Ausstellung auf der Hamburger Kastenschute H 11347 von 1913. Im Schaudepot im Schuppen 50A finden die Besuchenden Informationen zu Waren aus aller Welt, zu Schiffsmodellen oder dem historischen Verlauf der Hafenanlagen. Die PEKING ist das erste sichtbare Objekt in der Sammlung des Deutschen Hafenmuseums. Die Viermastbark ist eines der letzten großen Frachtschiffe, das zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts aufgrund seiner Geschwindigkeit, Sicherheit und Präzision noch mit Dampf- und Maschinenschiffen konkurrieren konnte. Das Schiff diente als Transportschiff für den damals stark nachgefragten Salpeter aus Chile. Die unter Denkmalschutz stehende BLEICHEN, die sich im Eigentum der Stiftung Hamburg Maritim befindet, repräsentiert eine ganze Generation von Frachtschiffen.

Technical special tour on winches, rigging, and ship construction. The four-masted bar PEKING uses three fully rigged masts and a schooner-rigged mizzen mast. How to weather storms using halyard and sheet winches, and other technical details on board the PEKING, will be explained during this approximately 60-minute tour every fourth Sunday of the month.
