Odeonsplatz

Head to Odeonsplatz to admire the breathtaking architecture of the Odeon, Feldherrnhalle, and Theatinerkirche, and see where Hitler’s 1923 Beer Hall Putsch collapsed under a hail of bullets from the Bavarian police. See Frauenkirche—one of Munich’s most significant architectural landmarks. Immerse yourself in the heart of the city at Marienplatz, Munich’s central square, see the richly decorated New Town Hall, and watch as the 43 bells of its historic clock strike the hour. Visit St. Peter’s Church—the city’s oldest parish church—before heading to the world’s most famous beer hall: Hofbräuhaus. Continue through Alter Hof, the former residence of Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig IV, toward the magnificent Residenz—the former center of the Bavarian Wittelsbach monarchy and Germany’s largest city palace. Finally, walk up to Siegestor—the “Victory Gate,” dedicated to the Bavarian army, damaged during the Allied bombing raids of World War II, and now a memorial to peace and the consequences of German militarism.
