What can art tell us about the element of fire and its destructive yet creative power? For the exhibition FIRE, curated by Joanna Warsza (City Curator Hamburg), Hamburg-based and international artists have engaged with this question, processing their thoughts in diverse artworks. The contemporary works explore the political, ecological, and spiritual dimensions of fire in an era of multiple crises and the associated feeling of being at the mercy of approaching catastrophes. They question how the omnipresent cycle of destruction and renewal can be broken – towards a more non-violent coexistence. Was kann uns Kunst über das Element Feuer und dessen zerstörerische und zugleich schöpferische Kraft erzählen? Für die Ausstellung FIRE, kuratiert von Joanna Warsza (Stadtkuratorin Hamburg), haben sich Hamburger und internationale Künstler:innen mit dieser Frage beschäftigt und ihre Überlegungen auf vielfältige Weise in Kunstwerken verarbeitet. Die zeitgenössischen Werke setzen sich dabei mit den politischen, ökologischen und spirituellen Dimensionen von Feuer auseinander, in Zeiten von Multikrisen und dem damit verbundenen Gefühl herannahenden Katastrophen ausgeliefert zu sein. Sie hinterfragen, wie sich der allgegenwärtige Kreislauf von Zerstörung und Erneuerung durchbrechen lässt – hin zu einem gewaltfreieren Miteinander. Zu der Ausstellung wird ein umfangreiches Begleitprogramm mit Führungen, Lesungen, Konzerte und anderen Veranstaltungen angeboten. Die Ausstellung ist vom 21.06. bis zum 21.09.2026 auf dem öffentlichen Gelände des Mahnmals sowie an ausgewählten Orten in Hamburg zu besichtigen. FIRE ist das zweite Kapitel der Reihe FROM THE COSMOS TO THE COMMONS der Stadtkuratorin Hamburg und widmet sich dem Element Feuer, der Apokalypse und Repair. In einer Ausstellung am Mahnmal St. Nikolai werden ortsspezifische Arbeiten von Hamburger und internationalen Künstler*innen präsentiert, die sich mit der politischen, ökologischen und spirituellen Dimension des Feuers in Zeiten akuter gesellschaftspolitischer Dringlichkeit auseinandersetzen. Im Rahmen des Sommerfestivals lädt Stadtkuratorin Joanna Warsza zu wöchentlichen performativen Rundgängen und Gesprächen in der Ausstellung ein, die ausgehend von den Arbeiten der Frage nachgehen, wie sich der Kreislauf von Zerstörung und Erneuerung durchbrechen lässt. At the playing table: guest carillonneur Reinhard Kwaschik from Potsdam.Reinhard Kwaschik, born 1952 in Torgau, began his career with an apprenticeship in organ building. After studying church music in Halle (Saale) and theology in Leipzig, he spent many years as a pastor.Since 2018 he has been deeply involved in the art of bells, particularly with bell casting and carillon music. He is currently a student at the Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn" in Mechelen (Belgien) with Jan Verheyen.Since 2025 he has been the Carillon representative for the Fördergesellschaft für den Wiederaufbau der Garnisonkirche Potsdam e. V. (FWG) and is involved in the establishment of the Peace Carillon in the tower of the Garnisonkirche Potsdam as an audible symbol of peace and reconciliation.The carillon concert can be heard on the square of the former church nave. On September 1, 1939, the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland. This marked the beginning of World War II. With a service, we commemorate this day and connect it with the exhibition by the city curator at the St. Nikolai Memorial: "FIRE. From the Cosmos to the Commons".Part of this exhibition is the work of artist Annette Kelm: The Books. She photographs the covers of those books that were banned and publicly burned in 1933. Her photos touch upon the present by asking about the value and fragility of our democratic society.
