HANSA Theater Hall

The HANSA auditorium is a true authority in variety entertainment and was at one point the last remaining theater of its kind in the Federal Republic. The interior has not changed since 1953, and visitors experience here, alongside all the dazzling facets of variety culture, top-notch traditional and innovative shows! The glorious history of this institution, now essential to Hamburg, began in 1894 when brewery owner Paul Wilhelm Grell purchased the then "Hansa Concert Hall." To encourage patrons to stay a bit longer, he transformed the former excursion pub into a performance stage where drinks were still served. This was very successful, and Grell also had the right instinct when it came to choosing his artists: international stars enchanted the audience around the turn of the century. Twenty-five years later, Grell's son Kurt joined the thriving business and took full control in 1924. However, in July 1943, tragedy struck: the HANSA auditorium was completely destroyed during heavy air raids on Hamburg. But apparently, Paul Wilhelm had passed on his success gene to his son: Kurt Grell did not get discouraged and rebuilt a new theater with 330 seats from the former stables and parts of the old foyer. Ten years later, Kurt Grell finally remodeled his beloved house again, turning the theater into a showcase venue with an integrated restaurant that seated 491 guests. Since then, this wonderful stage has not been altered, and visitors still enjoy its red-gold splendor today.
