South Moravia is the most important wine region in the Czech Republic. Mikulov is one of the enchanting historic towns located a 2.5-hour drive from Prague. The region is home to 96% of the country’s vineyards.
Viticulture in this region has been reliably traced back to the time of the Roman Empire—the 2nd century AD.
Ideally located north of the Alps and on the western edge of the Carpathians, the region benefits from a cooler climate that is particularly well suited to producing excellent white wines. The quality can be outstanding, especially among the Moravian whites. Mikulov certainly has the highest concentration of wine cellars for tastings, as well as a fairytale castle on a hill above the town.
