All PhotoBooks by Duane Michals Das PhotoBookMuseum präsentiert mit „All PhotoBooks by Duane Michals“ eine außergewöhnliche Retrospektive. Die hier gezeigten mehr als 80 Fotobücher stammen aus einer weltweit einzigartigen Sammlung, die das Museum mit Unterstützung seines Circle of Friends e. V. erwerben konnte.Zusammengetragen wurde sie von dem Fotografen und Sammler Tim Soter. Seine Reise begann als Fotostudent in Universitätsbibliotheken und führte ihn über die New Yorker Kult-Buchhandlung A Photographer’s Place direkt zu Duane Michals. Aus einem ersten Briefwechsel entwickelte sich eine tiefe, über ein Jahrzehnt andauernde professionelle Zusammenarbeit an Filmen, Fotos und Publikationen.Was diese Schau so besonders macht, ist der direkte Dialog zwischen den beiden Männern. Die ausgestellten Bücher sind keine anonymen Sammlerstücke, sondern Zeugen einer Freundschaft. Viele der Bände tragen persönlicheInschriften von Michals – spontane und oft reflektierte Notizen, die seine ganz eigene Verbindung zu Soter dokumentieren. Die Sammlung besticht durch ihre lückenlose Provenienz und Intimität: Neben seltenen Erst-Editionen umfasst sie auch wertvolle Arbeitsmaterialien sowie Ephemera und macht das Fotobuch per se als persönliche Bühne eines innovativen Fotokünstlers nachhaltig erlebbar. Duane Michals (1932–2026) revolutionierte die Fotografie, indem er das dokumentarische Einzelbild überwand. Als Autodidakt erfand er die „Sequences“: inszenierte, filmische Bildserien, die er mit handgeschriebenen Texten kombinierte. Für seine Erkundungen von Traum, Tod und Begehren wurde das Fotobuch zum ultimativen Medium. Seine vielen Publikationen, fast 90 Titel in mehr als 60 Jahren, nutzen die Dynamik des Umblätterns als genuine Ausstellungsfläche für seine vielen Geschichten. -  Tim Soter (*1971) ist ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf und Sammler aus New York. Seine Faszination für Duane Michals begann während des Fotostudiums und vertiefte sich durch seine Arbeit in der Buchhandlung A Photographer’s Place. Über zwei Jahrzehnte trug er die weltweit umfassendste Sammlung zu Michals zusammen. Aus dem Sammler wurde ein enger Vertrauter: Soter arbeitete über zehn Jahre lang aktiv mit Michals an Filmen und Publikationen und dokumentierte so das Spätwerk des Künstlers aus nächster Nähe. Diese Ausstellung und der dauerhafte Erhalt dieser einzigartigen Sammlung wurden maßgeblich durch das Engagement unseres Fördervereins ermöglicht. Unser besonderer Dank gilt daher dem Circle of Friends e. V. des PhotoBookMuseums. ENGLISH With “A ll PhotoBooks by Duane Michals ” the PhotoBookMuseum presents an extraordinary retrospective. The more than 80 photobooks on display come from a globally unique collection that the museum was able to acquire with the support of its Circle of Friends e.V. It was gathered by the photographer and collector Tim Soter. His journey began as a photography student in university libraries and led him, via the legendary New York bookstore A Photographer’s Place, straight to Duane Michals.An initial exchange of letters evolved into a deep professional collaboration on films, photographs, and publications that spanned over a decade. What makes this exhibition special is the direct dialogue between these two men. The books on display are not anonymous collector’s items, but witnesses to a friendship. Many of the volumes bear idiosyncratic inscriptions by Michals — personal, spontaneous, and often reflective notes that document his very own connection to Soter. The collection stands out forits seamless provenance and intimacy: alongside rare first editions, it also includes valuable working materials and ephemera. It brings the photobook to life right before our eyes as the personal stage of an innovative artist.  Duane Michals (1932–2026) revolutionized photography by moving beyond the traditional, documentary single image. For his explorations of dreams, death, and desire, the photobook became his ultimate medium. Tim Soter (*1971) is an American photographer and collector based in New York. His fascination with Duane Michals began during his photography studies and deepened through his work at A Photographer’s Place. Over two decades, he assembled the world’s most comprehensive collection on Michals. The collector eventually became a close confidant:Tim Soter collaborated actively with Michals on films and publications for over a decade, documenting the artist’s late work from a unique, firsthand perspective.
