Street names are not inherently called what they are called – their naming is the result of contemporary and societal discussions. For early street naming, for example, the local guilds and craft businesses were name-givers. Over time, more and more streets were named after (important and/or well-known) people or important events.Street names reveal the worldview, culture, and power relations of the respective era. Street names are therefore a central part of commemorative culture. They are intended to serve as orientation aids that take into account geographical as well as cultural and socio-political aspects. On our tour, we will visit, among others, streets whose names reflect the colonial past, the Nazi era, and industrialization.
