    Ausstellung "Einsatzgedanken"
    Mon 24.08. 07:00 - 14:00
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Hamburg Ordnance Disposal Service, the library of the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg presents the exhibition "War Legacy in the Course of Time. 1946-2026 from the Bomb Disposal Unit to the Ordnance Disposal Service." starting September 29, 2026. > When the city was surrendered without a fight to the British on May 3, 1945, the weapons fell silent in Hamburg – but the danger remained. Everywhere in the ground, in the rubble, in the waters: thousands of unexploded ordnance, abandoned ammunition, chemical warfare agents. The war was over, but Hamburg was far from safe. > Measures for the safe disposal of these war remnants were demanded. In April 1946, the Hamburg Bomb Disposal Unit was officially founded – now as the Ordnance Disposal Service (KRD), serving Hamburg and its people for 80 years. > The exhibition shows the historical development of the KRD using written, visual, audio, and film documents, as well as numerous exhibition items. It also provides insights into the current work of this department of the Hamburg Fire Department and illustrates how ordnance finds are documented, dangers are eliminated, and how innovative technologies ensure greater safety today. > Exhibition duration: September 29 - October 23, 2026 > Exhibition opening: September 29, 2026 • 6 PM > Library of the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg > Holstenhofweg 85 • 22043 Hamburg > Opening hours: > Mon-Thu: 9 AM - 4 PM > Fri: 9 AM - 2 PM > Closed on public holidays > Admission is free! > Note: For unimpeded access to the university campus, please have a photo ID ready. > Further information about the exhibition can be found at: https://www.ub.hsu-hh.de/80-jahre-kampfmittelraeumdienst/

The lecture is a companion event to the exhibition “War-time Legacies in Flux. 1946-2026 from the Bomb Disposal Command to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service”.Even more than eight decades after Operation Gomorrah, the remnants of World War II have not yet been eliminated. Estimates put the number of unexploded bombs still lying in Hamburg’s subsurface at around 2,500. During construction projects of all kinds, unexploded ordnance is found again and again. In the course of research that is partly to be described as historical, unexploded ordnance is located with clever and elaborate procedures, then defused or detonated by highly qualified professionals. The head of the Threat Detection Section for Ordnance Suspect at the Hamburg Fire Department, Annica Sewzyk, presents in her lecture how Hamburg’s specialists with detective-like precision and the most modern technology uncover bomb threats. She highlights the extensive investigative work based on historical war aerial photos and archives, which is carried out before every construction project. Using impressive image examples, her talk shows how she systematically evaluates suspect areas and thereby ensures safety long before an ordinance is even discovered or defused.Note: For unrestricted access to the university grounds please have a photo ID ready.Exhibition duration: 29.09.-23.10.2026Opening hours:Mon-Thu: 9:00-16:00Fri: 9:00-14:00Closed on public holidaysAdmission is free!

The lecture is a accompanying event to the exhibition „Kriegsaltlasten im Wandel der Zeit. 1946-2026 vom Bombenräumkommando zum Kampfmittelräumdienst“. In April 1946 the foundation for the Kampfmittelräumdienst was laid, but even 80 years later its work is far from done. Michael Hein, chief ordnance technician with the Kampfmittelräumdienst and – like all EOD specialists in Hamburg – a former member of the Bundeswehr, looks back. In his talk he describes the technical development of the clearance methods from the beginnings to today. He vividly highlights the sometimes spectacular improvement of technology, such as the self-developed high-pressure water jet cutting system, which can be controlled from a safe distance with 2400 bar water pressure and significantly reduces the risk in defusing. Remote-controlled robots and today's use of laser cutting technology are also presented. Mechanical defusing, the unscrewing of fuzes by pyrotechnicians as in the years after the end of the war, was far riskier. Nevertheless, as in the past 80 years: every operation is dangerous, precise, indispensable.Note: For unimpeded access to the university grounds please have a photo ID ready.Duration of the exhibition: 29.09.-23.10.2026Library of Helmut-Schmidt University/University of the Bundeswehr HamburgHolstenhofweg 85 • 22043 HamburgOpening hours:Mon-Thu: 9-16Fri: 9-14Closed on holidaysAdmission is free!
