Together, they form a panorama of current artistic strategies that is as surprising as it is entertaining.

For the first time, Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) and Edvard Munch (1863–1944) are presented together in a large double exhibition. At first glance, more than half a century separates the Austrian artist — whose works the Hamburger Kunsthalle had early on acquired as the first German museum — from the Norwegian painter, about whom the Kunsthalle holds a large collection of paintings and works on paper. And yet there are remarkable parallels between their works and biographies. In a thematic juxtaposition, their oeuvre becomes newly legible. Both are united by a unique treatment of color as a shaping medium and as a powerful expressive element for the inner life: for emotions such as sorrow, love, loneliness, fear, joy, or pain. At the same time, it is often overlooked bodily sensations and levels of perception that come into focus here, artistically reflected and thus give rise to distinctive imagery. For Lassnig as for Munch, painting was more than just an artistic technique. It was a form of self-examination and inquiry into the world. The exhibition comprises over 180 works, including several major pieces, but also paintings that are shown only rarely, impressive works on paper as well as films, photographs and a sculpture.

With "SCULPTURAL. The New Galleries," the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting its sculpture collection comprehensively for the first time in an exhibition spanning media and eras: Across 1,500 m², a parcours unfolds with over 500 sculptures, reliefs, paintings, prints, photographs, spatial and video installations from 2,500 years of art history in surprising juxtapositions – from antiquity to the present, from the second to the third dimension, from miniature to monumental. A special focus is placed on the newly discovered treasure of the collection: the smallest sculptures – "sculptures en miniature," as the first director Alfred Lichtwark called them: masterpieces of coin, medal, and relief art in gold, silver, and bronze. These new discoveries meet masterpieces from all media, such as the larger-than-life sculptures by Auguste Rodin or Aristide Maillol, ancient portraits enter into a dialogue with contemporary photography, reliefs by Käthe Kollwitz with body casts from the 1960s, and video works by Marina Abramović, among others.

»Isa Mona Lisa« is the ironically playful title of a major exhibition that offers vivid insights into contemporary art through special positions of international contemporary artists. The title is taken from a photograph of the same name by Wolfgang Tillmans (1968) featuring his artist colleague Isa Genzken (1948), both of whom are also represented with works in the exhibition. The selected exhibits – including paintings, drawings, photographs, and installations – are presented throughout the entire ground floor of the Galerie der Gegenwart.

With the exhibition "Photo: Hans Hansen," the MK&G is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to one of the most significant photographers of the post-war era from April 17 to November 1, 2026. Around 220 iconic photographs spanning over six decades will be shown. In international campaigns for Lufthansa, Nikon, Volkswagen, and Erco, among others, Hans Hansen revolutionized product photography from the 1960s onwards and shaped the collective visual memory of entire generations. The exhibition is complemented by works that highlight his close collaboration with designers such as Tapio Wirkkala. Tools, correspondence, sketches, archival material, and selected objects from his private collection also offer deeper insights into his working process. With his most recent series "Analog" (2024), Hansen also focuses on his own photographic means of expression in his unmistakable, objectively minimalist visual language; a new photo series is also being created especially for the exhibition.While the world outside the studio is constantly changing, there is a constant order within the studio: everything has its place. In his still lifes, Hans Hansen reduces objects to their essentials: he arranges, disassembles, and structures forms, colors, and materials. His photographs appear timeless. One of the best-known examples is the photograph of a VW Golf disassembled into around 7,000 individual parts (1988).His works bear an unmistakable signature by directing the gaze with radical clarity onto the everyday world of objects and design – he constantly seeks new visual solutions. Light and shadow, composition, and perspective are central parameters and elementary means with which he continually questions the essence of photography.

Through the loss of its utility, there exists the potential for an accumulation of meaning, specificity, and essence – a broken chair can signify more than a new one.

Sample Question is Nina Porter's first institutional solo exhibition and features new works commissioned by the Kunstverein on the occasion of the 9th Triennial of Photography: Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other. The artist's most recent works reconstruct the relational network of camera, subject, and image, distributing the focal points across their entire network. In addition to a series of photographs, the work exhibits sculptural characteristics, even though the works are not oriented towards a result or a process, but rather towards the observation of fleeting phenomena, such as the gaps between seeing and perceiving. The material components of Porter's practice behave like elements of an exchange, moving towards an immaterial space by simultaneously indexing time and highlighting the fullness of a moment and all that it can potentially contain.

On the way, we will visit some of the special staircases.In the Speicherstadt, we enter another world: unique warehouses, canals, bridges, loading openings, and castle-like facades. Here, goods from all over the world were stored: spices,pepper, tobacco, cocoa beans, coffee, and much more. The archaeological tour begins at one of Hamburg's most significant archaeological sites: the Bischofsburg. The 12th-century ring-shaped tower foundation, with its 19-meter diameter, is the oldest preserved stone building in Hamburg's Old Town. During the guided tour, participants will learn why the foundation is named after a bishop and what function this massive masonry served during Hamburg's early history. They will gain insights into the era of medieval castle complexes hidden beneath the streets, houses, and squares of the Old Town. The current rampart-like steel sculpture on Hammaburg-Platz commemorates the legendary "Hammaburg," the origin and namesake of the city of Hamburg. Highlights from the Hess’s most recent donation, made in 2025, will be on display from 28 June in a room within the ISA MONA LISA exhibition with works by Till Gehard, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse, John Schlesinger and Jeff Wall. Underwater, we see humans indistinctly, shapes blur, bodily boundaries dissolve, everything becomes fluid. The same happens in drag, the art form that dissolves gender roles through extravagant costumes and makeup, immerses identities in glitter and sequins, and above all offers a breathtaking show. Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale shows a similar transformation: a mermaid falls in love with a human and wants to get rid of her fish tail. The fairy tale famously ends tragically. Perhaps it reflects Andersen's own fate, who was in love with his childhood friend his entire life and could never live out this love. And at the same time, it is a story as old as humanity itself, of nymphs, nixies, and water spirits, of transformation and liberation from assigned roles. Director Bastian Kraft, together with the ensemble and stars of the Hamburg drag scene, dives into the depths where biography and fairy tale merge, to bring forth new narratives of transformation and liberation. At its premiere at the Schauspiel Zürich, this special production was celebrated with jubilation. Now it comes to Hamburg in its own version.
