Karlsbad is the most famous spa town in the Czech Republic. It was founded around 1350 by the Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Charles IV.
The city center lies in the narrow valley of the Teplá River and is overlooked by high, green hills. The colonnade and pedestrian zone are lined with the breathtaking architecture of wellness hotels. The most famous is the Grand Hotel Pupp, featured in the film Last Holiday. Another well-known hotel is Hotel Thermal, where the world-famous Karlovy Vary International Film Festival takes place.
Karlsbad gained international fame thanks to the healing properties of its local mineral springs, of which there are around one hundred, emerging from various depths at temperatures between 30 and 73 degrees Celsius.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the spa town was a popular destination for the nobility, as well as for poets, writers, and musicians.
